Beginner - Lesson Four Me Yet Again

Lesson number four! This time, we will get to do some really crazy stuff. Here we go...

For this lesson, I want you to count like this:

1 e and ah 2 e and ah and so on

its written like this:

1 e + a 2 e + a and so on... lets begin.

Its really neat to fit a bass or snare beat in between eighth notes on the hi hat. Try this:

   1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a
H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o o|
B| o o |

Once you get that, move on:

   1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a
H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o o o|
B| o o |

Get that at a really fast speed. Your goal for this part is to get this beat down pat:

   1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a
H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o oo o|
B| o o |

That was tricky! Now lets move to the bass:

   1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a
H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o |
B| o o o |
I find fitting the bass in between hi hat notes to be more difficult, but it sounds better, so make sure you get it done right!

H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o |
B| o o o o |

That was really hard. It sounds pretty good though. Keep working at it if you don’t have it yet. Remember to KEEP COUNTING while you play. Itwill help when you start playing really complicated beats.

H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o |
B| o o oo |

When doing a doing a double beat with the bass, make sure you make both beats the same volume. Sometimes, when people do this incorrectly, you can hear the first note, but the second when is so weak that it sounds like a ghost note. Play it slowly until you can play these properly.

H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o |
B| o o oo o |

Keep practicing these until you can play them at a decent speed.
IF THESE BEATS ARE TOO HARD, GO BACK TO ONE OF THE EARLIER LESSONS. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FULLY COMPLETED EACH LESSON BEFORE CONTINUING, OR SOME OF THIS STUFF WILL BE TOO HARD.

H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o |
B| oo o o o |

Okay, now lets get into the really awesome stuff! Mixing snare and bass beats in between hi hat notes!

H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o o |
B| o o o o |

Get each of these beats perfect, im just gonna write beats and keep makin ‘em harder!

H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o o |
B| oo oo |

H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o |
B| o o o oo |

H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o oo o|
B| oo o o oo |

H| x x x x x x x x |
S| o o o o o |
B| o o o o oo |

Whoo! That was tough! Now that you have the knowledge, write some of your own beats and try them out!

(note: if you find these confusing, think back to lesson 2; with beats like this:

H| x x x x |
S| o |
B| o o o o o |

The sixteenth note beats are the same as the above beat only more compact, which allows for more complexity. Now look for lesson five!!

Again, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to email me at [email protected] thanks, have fun!
