It may come as no surprise, but I am not at all religious

Nature has no need for faith in magical traditions

I never saw the use of building houses just for prayer

A god indoors seems off and odd no matter how you name her

But Europe had its centuries in times where gods were real 
    Em                                                Am 
And churches rose like mushrooms and even kings would kneel 
    Am                                            Dm 
The hand of Rome reached cities, people, cultures far abroad 
    E                                       Am 
For better or for worse, everyone was given God

This picture I paint is not quite complete

But to get to my point, it's just what I need

For my cynical view of the church and supporters

Demanding repression and sanctioning torture

In years that followed God was held as champion in war

The bible set the standard for the reading of the law

The older gods were woven in to mitigate collision

Traditions all absorbed in the making of religion

The servants of the church told everyone who feared the lord

Heaven's gate is paid with gold, come and show support 
Am                                    Dm 
Some of those donations were used for good indeed

But most of it was taken in the name of eager greed

How the flames rose through the towers

Liquid lead upon the floors

The roar of fire, louder, louder

Ancient wood of centuries

Blackened scars and injuries

The roof collapsed, the spire broke

Firemen in toxic smoke

God did not reach out to aid them

Left the building to its fate

But I felt strangely new and safe then

No more bitterness and hate

The fire changed my old opinions

Never fair my point of view

Faith unites so many millions 
           Am 
It's not important if it's true

And the pain of all its victims?

Well, the church has suffered too 
          G 
Caused by people, not by wisdom 
           Am 
Which that suffering led to
