Intro: Am Am Am AmAm Dm It may come as no surprise, but I am not at all religious Em Am Nature has no need for faith in magical traditions Am Dm I never saw the use of building houses just for prayer E Am A god indoors seems off and odd no matter how you name her Am Dm But Europe had its centuries in times where gods were real Em Am And churches rose like mushrooms and even kings would kneel Am Dm The hand of Rome reached cities, people, cultures far abroad E Am For better or for worse, everyone was given God F Am This picture I paint is not quite complete F Am But to get to my point, it's just what I need Em F For my cynical view of the church and supporters G Am Demanding repression and sanctioning torture Am Dm In years that followed God was held as champion in war Em Am The bible set the standard for the reading of the law Am Dm The older gods were woven in to mitigate collision E Am Traditions all absorbed in the making of religion Am Dm The servants of the church told everyone who feared the lord Em Am Heaven's gate is paid with gold, come and show support Am Dm Some of those donations were used for good indeed E Am But most of it was taken in the name of eager greed F Am This picture I paint is not quite complete F Am But to get to my point, it's just what I need Em F For my cynical view of the church and supporters G Am Demanding repression and sanctioning torture F G And then the day came that I saw C G Am How the flames rose through the towers F G Liquid lead upon the floors C G Am The roar of fire, louder, louder F G Ancient wood of centuries C G Am Blackened scars and injuries F G The roof collapsed, the spire broke C Am Firemen in toxic smoke Am God did not reach out to aid them F Left the building to its fate G But I felt strangely new and safe then Am No more bitterness and hate Am The fire changed my old opinions F Never fair my point of view G Faith unites so many millions Am It's not important if it's true Am And the pain of all its victims? F Well, the church has suffered too G Caused by people, not by wisdom Am Which that suffering led to Outro Am So no, I'm still not that religious F I close the holy books with ease G But no longer am I vicious Dm I am alone N.C. At peace
