  2. tuner

Tune guitar, bass and ukulele with your device microphone, right in the browser — free, nothing to install. Pick your instrument (or use chromatic mode), play one open string and follow the needle: when it rests in the green zone at the center, the string is in tune.

How to use the tuner

  1. 1

    Turn on the microphone

Click Start tuner and allow access. Nothing is recorded.

  2. 2

    Pick your instrument

Guitar, bass or ukulele — or leave it in Chromatic to detect any note.

  3. 3

    Play one open string

One at a time, close to the microphone. If another string rings along, damp it with a finger.

  4. 4

    Follow the needle

Tighten or loosen the peg until it rests in the green zone (±5 cents). Done: string in tune.

How to tune a guitar (standard tuning)

E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4

Standard guitar tuning is E A D G B E, from the 6th string (thickest) to the 1st (thinnest): E2, A2, D3, G3, B3 and E4. If a string is far below pitch, loosen it and tune up to the target — arriving at the note while tightening keeps the tuning more stable.

Other instruments

  • Bass (4 strings) E A D G
  • Ukulele G C E A
  • Drop D (guitar) D A D G B E

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. The tuner runs in your browser using your phone or computer microphone.

Does the tuner record my sound?

No. The audio is processed locally on your device — nothing is recorded or sent to the internet.

How accurate is it?

Detection is accurate to about ±1 cent. The green zone means a deviation of at most ±5 cents — finer than the ear can perceive.

What does the number next to the note mean (e.g. D3)?

It is the octave, in scientific pitch notation — middle C on the piano is C4 and the number changes at every C. D3 is the D of the guitar's 4th string (146.8 Hz). It is not the string number; it distinguishes the low E (E2) from the high E (E4).

The microphone is not working. What now?

Check that you allowed microphone access (lock icon in the address bar) and that the page is open over a secure connection (https). As a last resort, try another browser.
